Résumé
L’article décrit le contexte du développement des mathématiques en Afrique au Sud du Sahara et les contraintes subies par le continent pendant la traite négrière et le colonialisme. IL analyse ensuite les problèmes et la tâche à venir dans le développement des mathématiques. En mettant l’accent sur la nécessité pour les pays de la région de donner la priorité au développement des mathématiques et de faire face à la technologie actuellement nécessaire, il souligne la nécessaire coopération entre les pays africains et les pays développés. Abstract The paper outlines the background to the development of mathematics in Africa South of the Sahara and the constraints on the continent during slave trade and colonialism. Then the problems and the task ahead in mathematical developments are discussed. While the necessity for the countries in the region to give priority to mathematics development and cope with current technology in mathematical developments are emphasized, the cooperation between African and developed countries is stressed. The success to bridge the gap in technological developments between developing and developed countries, can only be achieved if there is a will from developed nations to act.
