Résumé

Cet article a été traduit et annoté par Hélène Gispert avec l’aide de Jeanne Peiffer. Les notes ajoutées à cet article tentent d’apporter, en contrepoint des données pour l’Allemagne présentées par l’auteur, quelques éléments relatifs à la situation française ; des travaux de Jeanne Peiffer sur l’historiographie des mathématiques en France et sur les sciences et les femmes dans le cadre des « Gender studies » sont également à l’origine de certaines des remarques et références bibliographiques complémentaires qui y figurent.

Abstract

A survey about women in mathematics (with extensive references on the recent literature). The three leading figures in the XVIII century were Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718-1799), Gabrielle-Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749) and Sophie Germain (1776-1831). The first doctors in mathematics were Sofia Kowalewskaja (Göttingen, 1874), Jelisabeta Fjodorowna Litwinowa (Bern, 1878), and Charlotte Angas Scott (London, 1885). At the end of the century there were added Thyra Eibe, Marie Gernet, Grace Chisholm (the wife of W. H. Young), and Mary F. Winston. In Germany, Emmy Noether and Hilda Geiringer were the first to obtain the venia legendi. Some data are given on women in mathematics in the first decades of the XX century, with references.
