Résumé
Il est bien connu que la formule de calcul du volume de sphère est donnée par V=4/3pi r^3 où r désigne le rayon de la sphère. Dans la Grèce antique, Archimède a utilisé un principe de mécanique (théorie du levier) pour découvrir cette formule. Au contraire, Zu Chongzhi et son fils Zu Xuan ont utilisé le principe de Zu Xuan (également connu comme méthodede Cavalieri) pour l’obtenir dans la Chine ancienne. Cet article retrace l’historique de ces deux approches et compare leurs similitudes et leurs différences. Ces approches reflètent très bien les manières de raisonner dans deux cultures différentes. En outre, l’auteur fait part de ses réflexions dans une perspective d’enseignement et décrit comment motiver un groupe d’enseignants stagiaires à relier ces deux approches l’évolution des idées de l’analyse Abstract It is well-known that the formula for computing the volume of sphere is given by
V=4pi r3
where R denotes the radius of the sphere. In Ancient Greece, Achimedes
used the Principle of Mechanics (Theory of the Lever) to discover such a formula. On
the contrary, Zu Chongzhi and his son Zu Xuan used Zu Xuan’s Principle (also known
as Cavalieri’s Principle) to obtain it in Ancient China. These approaches reflected
very well the ways of reasoning in the course of discovery of this formula in two
different cultures. This paper will trace the historical background of these two approaches
and compare their similarities and differences. In addition, the author will discuss his
reflections from the educational perspectives and illustrate how to motivate a group of
teacher trainees to relate these two approaches to the evolution of calculus ideas. We
hope our discussion would be found useful to other educators in the same research
areas.
