Résumé
Le but de cet article est de présenter quelques données fondamentales de la vie de Wilhelm Matzka, de décrire brièvement son activité à l’Université de Prague et ses publications, de se familiariser avec son travail sur la théorie des déterminants, qui avait surgi dans les pays tchèques à cette époque. Wilhelm Matzka (1798-1891) était professeur de mathématiques à l’Université de Prague. Il est né à Lipertice en Moravie, a étudié à l’Université de Prague, a servi de nombreuses années dans l’armée autrichienne à Vienne. Ses activités pédagogiques se sont situées à Vienne, Tarnow et Prague (Prague Polytechnics et Université de Prague). Pendant de nombreuses années, il a été membre de la Königliche Böhmische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften [Société royale des sciences de Bohème]. Abstract This article deals with the topic of my doctoral thesis called Life and Work of Wilhelm Matzka.
Il a donné des cours sur l’analyse, l’algèbre et la géométrie. Il était également engagé dans d’autres parties de mathématiques et dans certaines parties de la physique. Dans tous ces domaines, il a écrit des manuels, des articles d’experts et des études.
The aim of this article is to state some fundamental data of Matzka’s life, briefly outline his activity at the University of Prague and his publications, furhter familiarize with his work about the theory of determinants and also with other works about the theory of determinants, that had arisen in Czech
countries at that time.
Wilhelm Matzka (1798-1891) was a full professor of mathematics at the University of Prague. He was born in Lipertice in Moravia, studied at the University of Prague, served many years in Austrian army in Vienna. His pedagogical activities are adherent to Vienna, Tarnow and Prague (Prague
Polytechnics and University of Prague). For many years he funcioned at Königliche böhmische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften [the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences].
He lectured on analysis, algebra and geometry. He was engaged also in other mathematics parts and some special parts of physics. In these areas he wrote textbooks, expert articles and studies.
The spectrum of his works was very comprehensive. Complete list of W. Matzka’s publications not exist till this time.
In the second part of 19th century it was hardly developed study of some parts of algebra, high attention was attended to the theory of determinants. This problem was very favourite in Czech countries. A lot of les or more original special works had arisen. The first books of the theory of determinants, methodical and popular articles were written.
