Résumé

Le problème qui consiste à trouver trois cercles tangents aux trois côtés d’un triangle et entre eux est connu sous le nom de problème de Malfatti, Il était pourtant étudié au Japon trente ans avant que Malfatti ne le traite. On le trouve ainsi à la fin du 18e au Japon, au début du 19e en Europe, et à la fin du 19e en Chine.
Au-delà de l’intérêt géométrique du problème,son attrait réside dans les divers contextes historiques et culturels de son étude.

Abstract

The geometric problem about three circles lying inside a triangle each of which
touching two sides of the triangle and the two other circles has come to be known as the Malfatti Problem, although the problem was studied in Japan about thirty years before Malfatti studied it. This problem appeared in the latter part of the eighteenth century in Japan, also in the early part of the nineteenth century in Europe and was studied in the latter part of the nineteenth century in China. Other than just an interesting geometric problem its appeal lies in the different historical and cultural contexts in which the problem was studied during different periods in different countries for different purposes.
