Comme les éditions précédentes, cet ouvrage publié pour la première fois en 1979 couvre à la fois les champs culturel, historique et scientifique des mathématiques. On y trouve les définitions des termes les plus courants intervenant dans l’enseignement secondaire et universitaire. Abstract This reference book of mathematics is designed for readers of various levels of mathematical knowledge. Comprising 7600 entries it covers the concepts of secondary school mathematics and of the first university courses. Numerous examples and about 700 illustrations aim at better understanding of the definitions. There is also some vocabulary to be found in the mathematical language that is unusual or absolute. On 19 pages all symbols and notations used are summarized and on 23 pages there are numerical tables. (ZDM/Mathdi)

Cet ouvrage est la quatrième édition, mise à jour et augmentée, d’un travail collectif publié pour la première fois en 1979 sous la direction de François Le Lionnais.
Il est l’objet d’une recension dans le Bulletin de l’APMEP n° 392 ainsi que la 8e édition sous la rubrique « matériaux pour une documentation » du Bulletin de l’APMEP n° 485.
