Résumé

L’article décrit deux manuels d’arithmétique islandais, publiés respectivement en 1780 et 1911-1914, tous deux écrits au début d’une époque où l’amélioration de l’enseignement général était inscrite à l’ordre du jour pour restaurer la société islandaise après des catastrophes naturelles. Les deux manuels ont mis l’accent sur l’arithmétique non conventionnelle et mentale. Les deux livres ont été critiqués par des personnes influentes. L’accent est mis ici sur les motivations de leurs arguments. Les deux livres ont survécu à la critique, compte tenu des circonstances, alors que peu de commentaires positifs ont été trouvés dans les sources de leur époque.

Abstract

The paper describes two Icelandic arithmetic textbooks, published respectively in 1780 and 1911-14, both written at the beginning of an era when enhancing general education was placed on the agenda for restoring the Icelandic society after natural disasters. Both textbooks emphasized uncon-ventional and mental arithmetic. Both books were criticized by influential persons. The focus is on the grounds of their arguments. Both books survived the criticism, considering the circumstances, while few positive comments on them have been found in sources from their times.
