This paper analyses the main technical aspects of the style and the contents of some texts whose aim is to provide scientific information to a large public audience. Starting from journalistic, encyclopedic and literary sources, it will also derive some hints on how to set up mathematical education for adults. It is addressed to teachers and researchers interested in the problem of conveying basic mathematical ideas in an informal way to non-mathematicians
