Résumé

Au début du XIXe siècle,les professeurs de mathématiques n’enseignaient pas dans les diverses institutions les mêmes domaines des mathématiques. Le problème des frontières entre les domaines adjacents et les questions institutionnelles pouvait être importants dans la constitution des différents programmes d’études. Cet article examine ces facteurs dans la constitution des différents programmes de mathématiques à l’University College of London (UCL). De plus, cette recherche suggère que pour mieux comprendre un mathématicien, il est nécessaire d’enquêter sur le système de l’institution dans laquelle le mathématicien a travaillé, la nature des étudiants, les relations mutuelles entre les professeurs des domaines adjacents dans le même établissement, et les spécificités pédagogiques des espaces adjacents de cet établissement.

Abstract

In the early nineteenth century, mathematics professors did not teach the same areas of mathematics in various institutions. The boundary problem between the adjacent fiels and the institutional matters could be important in the constitution of the different educational curriculums.This article examines the important factors which had influence on the constitution of the different mathematical curricula in the University College of London.

So this research will then suggest that for a better understanding of a mathematician, it is necessary to investigate the systematic nature of the institution in which the mathematician worked at, the nature of the students , the mutual relationships between the other professors of the adjacent areas in the same institution, and the distinctive educational features of the adjacent areas in that institution.
